"UEL Cup" - CAIEP National College
Students Spoken English Contest concluded
with great success on July 17. 25 finalists
were selected from close to 2,000 initial
participants to compete in the final round
of the "UEL Cup" held in Tsinghua
University - Meng Ming Wei building. Huang
Xun of Beijing University and Li Si Zhe
of Beijing Broadcasting University took
the first prizes for non-English and English
majors respectively. To enhance objectivity
and reliability of the contest, organisers
used a testing system called PhonePass SET
to evaluate each contestant's English ability
in fluency, grammar and pronunciation. Judges
included professors Liu Run Qing ( Beijing
Foreign Languages University ), Dong Qi
Ming ( Beijing Capital Normal University
), Liu Shi Sheng ( Tsinghua University )
and Luo Shi Sheng (Tsinghua Humanities Institute),
who regarded PhonePass SET highly as an
assessment tool for both institutions and
enterprises.
